"Bridge of Hope"は日本語と英語で一冊の本に纏められた170年余にわたる日系アメリカ人史です。

初めてアメリカ大陸の土を踏んだ日本人として記録に残っているのは、1834年、現在のワシントン州の北端にあるフラタリー岬に漂流民としてたどり着いた14才の音吉ほか二人の男たちでした。この日系史は数奇な運命に翻弄された音吉(マシュー・オトソン)の物語から始まります。

江戸末期の1853年、米国海軍のペリー提督の来航により日本は220年余の長い鎖国に終止符をうち開国を余儀なくされ、それと共に日米関係が徐々に始まっていきます。

1860年代になると、藩士の子弟のアメリカ留学が盛んになり、彼らはアメリカで習得した近代文明を日本に持ち帰り日本の近代化が進んでいきます。

1868年に始めての日本人出稼ぎ移民がハワイで働き始め、アメリカ本土の労働者移民は1890年までに徐々に増え、その後急速に増加し始めました。 日系移民の辿った道は決して平坦ではありませんでした。勤勉に働き、子供たちを教育し、現在の日系社会への信用と土台を作ったこの100年余の日系人先駆者の歩んできた道は非常に困難なものでした。特に日本軍の真珠湾攻撃による日系人の置かれた立場と、第二次世界大戦の日系兵のアメリカ社会および日系社会への貢献、そして戦後名誉回復のために戦った日系人の物語はアメリカの歴史に残る貴重な史実として書かれています。

Written in both Japanese and English, this book spans over 170 years of Japanese-American history in the United States, including rare illustrations and photographs dating back to the 1850's.

The first Japanese people to step foot on American soil were fourteen year old Otokichi and two other young sailors.In November of 1832, their small vessel, with a crew of fourteen, left the port of Toba, Japan and was lost in the storm-tossed wintry seas. In January of 1834, after drifting for fourteen months, the vessel finally came ashore at Cape Flattery in Washington. This book begins with the story of the vicissitude of Otokichi's life.

In 1853, the arrival of Commodore Perry's black ships at Uraga Japan symbolized the beginning of the modernization of Japan. The U.S.-Japan Treaty of Peace and Amity was signed in 1854, ending over two centuries of Japan's isolation from the world.

1860s~1870s, many sons of the samurai elites came to the U.S. East Coast colleges with the intention of obtaining an education. They learned western culture and ideology and made noteworthy contributions upon their return to Japan.

In 1868, the first Japanese labor immigration to Hawaii started. As for the mainland U.S., labor immigration started to develop in 1890s. Most of the laborer immigrants found work on the West Coast in the fishing, agricultural and railroad sectors. These early settlers struggle to adapt to a new life in a new country. They worked their way past every obstacle and every setback which threatened their livelihood and survival. Despite tremendous odds, their communities took root and flourished. We hope that reading this book provides you with some insight into the cultural growth and transition of the Japanese-American people over the last 150 years.
